A 39-year-old worker has died after an explosion at a boat yard in West Melbourne, marking yet another fatal incident to be investigated by WorkSafe Victoria in 2026.
The explosion occurred in late July at the boat yard, killing the worker and prompting a WorkSafe Victoria investigation. Exact circumstances surrounding the explosion, including the work being performed at the time and any equipment involved, remain subject to the ongoing investigation.
Victorian Trades Hall Council confirmed the fatality, extending condolences to the worker’s family, friends and colleagues and calling — as it does with each Victorian workplace death — for stronger accountability for employers who fail in their duty of care.
WorkSafe Victoria has confirmed it is investigating the incident. No charges have been announced.
The death comes as WorkSafe continues to record a significant number of workplace fatalities across the state in 2026, adding to pressure on employers — particularly in trades and marine industries — to review the adequacy of their risk controls around high-hazard work involving fuel, gas and confined or enclosed spaces.
Employers conducting work on vessels or in boat yards are reminded of their obligations to identify and control hazards associated with flammable or explosive substances, confined spaces, and hot work — and to ensure that workers are not placed in harm’s way where those controls are not in place.
