In response to the recent M6 tunnel silicosis scandal, the NSW government has taken a significant step this week by establishing an expert taskforce to address silica-related health risks in tunnelling projects. This development comes as the latest measure to tackle the ongoing crisis that has affected 13 workers on the M6 motorway tunnel project in southern Sydney.
The newly formed taskforce, announced on Thursday, comprises representatives from government, medical experts, industry leaders, and union officials. Its primary focus will be on four key areas:
- Improving the use of data
- Enhancing health monitoring practices
- Implementing best practice work health and safety controls
- Strengthening compliance measures
NSW Minister for Work Health and Safety, Sophie Cotsis, emphasised the government’s commitment to protecting workers from silicosis, stating, “We have zero tolerance for any employer exposing workers to unsafe levels of silica”
This initiative demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing the health and safety concerns raised by the M6 silicosis outbreak. As investigations continue, the taskforce is expected to play a crucial role in developing and implementing strategies to prevent future incidents and improve overall workplace safety in high-risk industries like tunnelling and construction.
The establishment of this expert taskforce marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to combat silica-related health risks and ensure the safety of workers in NSW’s infrastructure projects.
