A Message from the Editor

Dear Readers,

On behalf of the NSCA Foundation team, I am pleased to introduce National Safety Online, a new initiative from the http://www.nscafoundation.org.au.

For almost a century, the NSCA Foundation has established itself as a respected authority in workplace health and safety across Australia. During my three years with the NSCA team, I’ve gained valuable insights into the importance of our work in this field.

Throughout my time in the workplace, I have observed how workplace safety, psychosocial factors, and mental health considerations can be undervalued. While these issues were occurring around me, I wasn’t always fully cognisant of them, perhaps due to my youth and the experience that comes with developing a better knowledge of identifying these risks. The 2020s have made these concerns more prominent in the public consciousness, which is a positive development.

Working with the NSCA Foundation has given me perspective as someone who was initially from the outside looking in. I’ve come to realise how vital this area is, and more importantly, how passionate people in this industry truly are. We must celebrate that passion by using this platform as a forum for that celebration, especially in the current climate where positive thinking in workplaces—and indeed in society in general—is incredibly valuable. We need to hold onto that.

Our industry experts consistently demonstrate their commitment to safety education, which has led us to consider: How can we better deliver important safety information to professionals across the sector?

After careful consideration of how media consumption has evolved, we’ve made the decision to transition National Safety Magazine from its traditional print format to this new online platform. This shift from print to digital allows us to reach more safety professionals, provide more timely updates, and create a more interactive experience. This is why we felt creating National Safety Online was necessary.

This platform has been designed to facilitate informed discussion among safety professionals about relevant and timely issues. We aim to consolidate industry knowledge to provide a valuable resource for practitioners at all levels.

We are committed to developing this platform to address the practical needs of our audience and to provide content that is both relevant and applicable to your professional environment.

I encourage you to follow our updates on LinkedIn and Instagram. Your input will be valuable in guiding the development of this resource. For any feedback, suggestions, or comments you might have, please contact me at media@nscafoundation.org.au.

I look forward to the continued development of National Safety Online.

Regards,

Ashley Penin, Editor, National Safety Online

Two comments. Many years ago I was working as a relief safety advisor and was tasked to investigate an incident where an employee had hit their head while exiting through a personel door of a large roller door. It was raining at the time and it was some distance from the workshop to the employee carpark. After talking to the employee, I formed the opinion that the incident was the result of the worker hurrying to get through the door, to their car. A painter came to Safety Office with their half face respirator, claiming it was hard to breathe to through. On inspection I found that the respirator cartridge was "black". When I removed the cartridge retaining ring, the cartridge was actually a white one. I asked the painter when was the last time he changed the cartridge, he replied "changed the cartridge"! I asked him, had he told his supervisor. His reply, You're the safety officer!
