A worker has died following an incident at Wellington’s CentrePort — the first fatal workplace incident at a major New Zealand commercial port since 2022 — with Maritime NZ launching a full investigation.
Police were notified at approximately 7:20am on 1 September 2026 of a death at a facility in the Pipitea area. The worker was employed by C3, an independent stevedoring company operating at the port.
CentrePort confirmed the death and described it as a tragic incident, with the port operator working alongside C3, New Zealand Police and Maritime NZ in its response. The full circumstances of how the worker died have not been publicly confirmed as the investigation is ongoing.
